In order to cope with the extreme space environment, most space suits use fabric layers (neoprene, polyester, etc.) to achieve a strong thermal insulation effect, and covered with a reflective outer layer (polyester film or white fabric) to reflect sunlight. The astronaut's body produces heat, especially when it comes to intense activity. If the heat generated is not eliminated in time, the sweat produced by the astronauts will cause the helmet to be covered with water mist, and the astronauts will be severely dehydrated. When spacewalking was carried out in the Gemini mission, astronaut Eugene Cernan lost a few pounds. The space suit uses a fan/heat exchanger to blow cold air or a liquid cooling device to cool away excess heat. For example, Mercury and Gemini plan to use the former method, while liquid cooling clothes cool down from Apollo. The plan has been used until today.

The helmets of space suits are mostly made of transparent plastic or durable polycarbonate. Most helmets have a sun-reflecting cover and a colored sun visor to reduce glare, just like sunglasses. Before walking in space, the inner side panel of the helmet is sprayed with anti-fog compounds. In order to allow astronauts to see the targets in the shadows, modern spacesuit helmets are equipped with lighting systems.
