Bayer MaterialScience polycarbonate for smart car roof

Webasto AG is producing a polycarbonate roof for the Smart Fortwo. The roof is blended with an infrared absorber, so the car stays cool even in hot weather.

Global Polyurethane Network January 14th: Webast is an auto parts company in Munich, Germany. It is the world's largest supplier of roof injection molding and clear coatings. Its infrared absorber is derived from Bayer MaterialScience (BMS).

The roof is made of Makrolon polycarbonate from Bayer MaterialScience for the third generation of Mercedes-Benz cars.

The infrared absorber is placed in the polycarbonate pellet to help the car roof absorb solar energy and prevent the temperature inside the car from being too high in fine weather. According to Bayer MaterialScience, if the temperature of the vehicle is not very high, there is no need to use air conditioning, thus achieving the goal of reducing fuel consumption.

The company further emphasizes that the lightweight material of the polycarbonate roof also plays a role in reducing fuel consumption, and the polycarbonate roof weight is reduced by 50% compared with glass.
